Guided Reading is an approach to teaching reading that allows the child to take control of the first reading of a text. It helps the child understand that reading is about constructing meaning from written text. Using a Guided Reading approach calls for the teacher to:
- observe what the child is able to do independently
- select a book that provides the appropriate amount of challenge for the child
- provide the right amount of support needed for the child to read the text
- extend and evaluate the child's understanding of the story
- teach and reinforce the most important skills and strategies
- decide the next appropriate text for the child
This approach allows the teacher to cater to the diverse needs of the students in the classroom by grouping children with similar strengths and needs together.
This strategy differs from traditional guided reading in the following ways:
The reading material is carefully chosen to match the instructional levels of the students.
The text should be chosen such that children can read 90-95% of the words independently but will need to apply reading strategies to the remaining unfamiliar words. Leveled reading lists assist in the selection of appropriate reading materials.
The teacher works with small groups of no more than 4-6 students.
When teachers work with small groups, they are able to identify which strategies the students are using and provide instruction as needed. Group interaction enables students to learn from one another; talking in groups takes thinking to higher levels.
Groups are flexible and dynamic.
Students are placed in groups according to their reading levels and use of strategies. Groups may be changed as frequently as the teacher deems appropriate.
Students are taught reading strategies.
Discussions and questions focus around what to do when an unfamiliar word is encountered or the meaning is unclear.
Ongoing observation and assessment inform instruction.
Running records, anecdotal notes and informal observations help teachers assess student needs and determine what reading materials and strategy instruction are most appropriate for each student.
