Wekiva's media center houses a collection of over 12,000 books! An open media center format allows students to check out books, participate in free-time activities, and do research any time during the school day. Mrs. Bunsa, our Media Specialist, also provides media skills lessons to all classes.
Accelerated Reader is a computerized reading program in which students read books on their ability level, take a test on the computer, and earn points and incentives in their classrooms for their efforts.
KNN, Wekiva's live morning news show, is broadcast from our studio in the media center. Fifth grade students run the show and their technical expertise is awesome! Last year we were fortunate to add a teleprompter to our studio equipment. Students from all grade levels are given the opportunity to appear on the show throughout the year.
Students in grades 3 through 5 are encouraged to read the Florida Sunshine State books and vote for their favorites. For kindergarten through second grade students, a basket of Florida Reading Association titles is circulated to each classroom. Teachers read aloud these wonderful books and the students vote for their favorites.
Two subscription reference resources Electric Library and World Book Online are provided by the county and are readily available from which students can access online information from a variety of sources including magazines, books, newspapers, maps, and an encyclopedia.
The most important mission of our media program is to instill a love of reading in our students!
