Wekiva Elementary was built in 1978 and is located in the heart of the Wekiva subdivision, a golf community of 1500 homes with winding bike paths, two small lakes, three parks, tennis courts, and nature trails. Wekiwa is a Creek Indian word that means “spring of water”. Wekiwa Springs is the headwater of the Wekiva River. Wekiva means “flowing water”.
Wekiva fully supports SCPS and Dr. Vogel’s philosophy of the “Three A’s”: Academics, Arts, and Athletics. We are proud to be ranked an A+ school for the 10th year in a row! On the FCAT, Wekiva scores above the district and state averages on “mean scale score” and “percent of students at or above grade level” in the following categories: 3rd grade FCAT Reading and 3rd grade FCAT math; 4th grade FCAT Reading and 4th Grade FCAT math; 5th grade FCAT Reading, FCAT Math, FCAT Science. In addition to outstanding academics, Wekiva also sponsors the Koala Players, our drama club, and a wonderful visual arts program. In fact, one of our students won the National First Place award for PTA Reflections last year! To support athletics, Wekiva offers a strong Physical Education program, based upon educating our students on healthy life-styles, sportsmanship, and overall personal health. We also offer WOW Time (Work Out Wekiva) on non-PE days and we are proud to sponsor a competitive K-5 Cross Country Team.
We currently have about 700 students. Our mascot is the koala.
