Art

Greetings from the art room! In the months ahead the students will have a lot of fun creating their own artwork as well as learning to appreciate famous works of art.

Much of this will be done through units on the Elements of Art: line, shape, color, texture, space, and form with different projects for each grade level, building upon skills learned in previous years. The children will explore new media.

They will, in the process of creating, sharpen their decision making skills. They will learn that it's okay to make mistakes because then they can make adjustments and changes. And hopefully, they will learn that art is all around them, they have only to stop and enjoy!

Music

The music classroom centers on experience with rhythm, singing, moving, playing, listening, and evaluating. From kindergarten through fifth grade, all students will have opportunities to experience music in many different ways. Music is a cumulative curriculum, allowing students to master skills through each grade level. Elementary school is the perfect place for preparation that is broad yet comprehensive, leading to the larger goal of participating in middle school and high school programs, should they choose. For those who simply come to music during elementary school, the benefits are many. Our classroom rules, CPR (cooperation, participation, and respect), point to the social elements of a music classroom, but there is much more. ";Young children who take music lessons show different brain development and improved memory over the course of a year, compared to children who do not receive music training. Musically trained children perform better in a memory test that is correlated with general intelligence skills in literacy, verbal memory, visiospatial processing, mathematics, and IQ."; (Dr. Laurel Trainor, Prof. of Psych, Neuroscience and Behavior, 2006)

Third, fourth and fifth grade students will be playing recorders which can be purchased through the school store. Recorders that are sanitized daily are also available for borrowing in the music room. A letter will be sent home regarding this program. Students should keep their recorders in their backpacks at all times for classroom use and home practice. Please check the Koala MusicKidz page on Mrs. Pekoe's webpage for information about the before and after school music program for third, fourth, and fifth grade students, in addition to regular general music classes.

Thank you for supporting your child's music education.
